Information for prospective students

What does the master's program in drug research teach?

The four-semester, consecutive master's program is strongly research-oriented and focuses on current projects, providing graduates with broad knowledge in the field of drug research. By independently working on scientific problems and tasks, students are expected to gain qualifications for pharmaceutical-scientific fields of activity, particularly in the pharmaceutical and pharmacy-related industries or in drug research institutions.

How is the program structured?

The program is characterized by a wide range of compulsory and elective modules, which students select individually together with a supervisor in the form of a mentorship.

By choosing a specialization area (focus), students decide on one of the following seven subject areas represented at the University of Bonn:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Biomedicine
  • Pharmaceutical Biology
  • Pharmaceutical Technology
  • Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • Clinical Pharmacy
  • Pharmaceutical Microbiology

About the specializations

In the first semesters, students acquire broad basic knowledge in the pharmaceutical disciplines. At the same time, students specialize further in their chosen pharmaceutical discipline through compulsory modules, in which they then complete an independent scientific thesis (master's thesis) in the fourth semester. Each semester, students must complete modules worth approximately 30 credit points.
Information on the modules and the course of study can be found here

Who is this degree program suitable for?

The program is aimed in particular at graduates of the state examination in pharmacy who wish to pursue further scientific qualifications after completing their studies. These candidates can have their basic modules in the pharmaceutical disciplines recognized, reducing the duration of their studies to approximately two semesters.

However, the program is also intended to appeal to other interested parties, such as bachelor's degree graduates from natural science and pharmacy-related programs, as well as graduates of medical programs in Germany and abroad.

In which language are classes taught?

The program is designed to be bilingual, with most courses taught in German and a few modules in English. However, most courses are taught in German.

Are there tuition fees?

There are no tuition fees; only the social contribution must be paid each semester.
