Working Group Claff
Pharmaceutical & Medicinal Chemistry

Assistant Professor Dr. Tobias Claff

My research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of protein ligand interactions at the molecular level. By integrating structural biology with biophysical and cell-based assay systems, I investigate the mechanisms of molecular recognition and signaling in pharmacologically relevant target proteins. My work provides mechanistic insights that enable the identification of new therapeutic targets and opportunities for structure-based drug discovery.

 Research focus

  • Structural characterization of proteins, with a particular focus on membrane proteins
  • Cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography
  • G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) as pharmacological targets
  • Functional validation using cell-based assays and molecular binding analyses
  • Structure-based drug design

News

Carl Wilhelm Scheele Prize for Dr. Tobias Claff

Bayer Thesis Prize 2022 for tobias Claff
In cooperation with the Pharma Center Bonn and the Limes Institute, Bayer AG has awarded two PhD prizes for outstanding dissertations in the field of pharmaceutical research to outstanding young scientists.
Lecture award for Tobias Claff at the DPhG PhD student and postdoc meeting
Tobias Claff received a lecture award at the PhD student and postdoc meeting of the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG).
Activation of opioid receptors elucidated
PhD student Tobias Claff from the working group of PZB spokesperson Prof. Dr. Christa E. Müller, in collaboration with research colleagues from Shanghai, Brussels Canada and the USA, was able to use X-ray crystallography to show which parts of the receptor are responsible for binding the active substances. With this knowledge, it should be possible to develop substances that activate only DOP.
